Greenville, Mississippi, Receives Grant to Commemorate 1927 Flood Anniversary

The city of Greenville has been awarded a $20,000 America250 Legacy Grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council to mark the 100th anniversary of the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927.

The funding will support a project titled “Remembering the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927: 100 Years of Devastation, History, Progress, and Resilience.” The initiative aims to explore the flood’s impact on Greenville and the Mississippi Delta while honoring community resilience.

As part of the project, Greenville will unveil a permanent Mississippi Freedom Trail Marker and install high-water markers and interpretive plaques along a self-guided Flood-Line Trail. These features are designed to create a lasting legacy for future generations, officials said.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons expressed pride in the project, stating, “The Great Flood of 1927 tested Greenville’s spirit, but it also revealed our resilience. Nearly 100 years later, we remember, reflect, and continue to rise. This grant allows us to honor those who endured while celebrating the resilience that defines Greenville.”

The initiative aims to preserve local history and inspire community reflection on past hardships and progress.
