Greenville Mayor Participates in Panel on Rural Prosperity in Mississippi Delta

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons participated Wednesday in a panel discussion on advancing rural prosperity in the Mississippi Delta. The event was hosted by the America’s Rural Future Commission at Mississippi Valley State University.

The bipartisan commission, led by former U.S. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp and former New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu, is examining solutions to strengthen rural communities nationwide. Simmons joined Delta Regional Authority Federal Co-Chair Dr. Corey Wiggins and HOPE Credit Union CEO Bill Bynum to discuss opportunities and challenges in the region.

Simmons highlighted Greenville’s progress, citing more than $3.2 billion in recent investments. These include infrastructure, energy, freight, and resiliency projects aimed at bolstering the regional economy and supporting supply chains along the Mississippi River.

The mayor emphasized that rural communities are actively building their futures, not waiting for rescue. “The Mississippi Delta is not lacking talent, culture, or work ethic. What our communities have experienced for generations is disinvestment. But Greenville’s story proves something important — rural communities are not waiting to be rescued. We are building,” Simmons said.

He added that with strategic partnerships, infrastructure development, and access to capital, rural America can transition from survival to growth. Greenville’s example demonstrates how strong local leadership and regional collaboration can unlock opportunities across rural areas, officials said.
