Greenville Celebrates Women’s Suffrage and Black History with Theatre Event

Greenville Mayor Errick D. Simmons and the city’s Youth Council welcomed students and community members to a theatrical performance titled “Sojourner & Susan & Ida & Alice: A History of Women’s Suffrage (Lawbreakers!)” at T.L. Weston Middle School.

The event, produced by New Stage Theatre, aimed to bring history to life by honoring women who challenged unjust laws and fought for voting rights. The performance portrayed these women as trailblazers who paved the way for future generations to be heard and counted, according to a news release from the city.

Officials emphasized that Black history and women’s history are integral parts of American history. The event served as a reminder that the fight for voting rights remains ongoing and that participation in democracy is essential. Mayor Simmons praised the students for their voices and encouraged them to lead with courage and conviction.

Greenville officials expressed gratitude to the Greenville Public School District, T.L. Weston Middle School staff and students, New Stage Theatre education assistant Betty Wong, and community partners for their investment in youth leadership. The city highlighted that the event was more than a performance; it was a call to action for democracy, justice, and progress.

City leaders urged continued efforts to build an inclusive community where every voice matters, especially during Black History Month and Women’s History Month.
