Fire Destroys Robert C. Irwin Library in Tunica County

Four individuals were inside the Robert C. Irwin Library when it caught fire Thursday afternoon shortly after 2 p.m., according to the Tunica County Sheriff’s Office. All were able to escape safely, and one person was treated for smoke inhalation on scene but did not require hospitalization.

The library, a community hub for learning, refuge, and connection, was heavily damaged in the blaze. Authorities called it one of the worst fires to affect Tunica County. Despite the loss of the building, no lives were lost, which officials described as a significant victory.

First responders from the Tunica Volunteer Fire Department and North Tunica Fire Department worked tirelessly to extinguish the flames. Community members and agencies rallied together during the crisis, demonstrating resilience and unity, according to the sheriff’s office.

In honor of the emergency response efforts, local organizations provided meat and cheese platters to the fire departments. DeSoto County Search & Rescue volunteers also contributed to the community’s response.

The sheriff’s office expressed gratitude to all those involved and reflected on the library’s significance to the community. While the physical building is gone, officials said its spirit endures through the stories, memories, and community bonds it fostered.
