Fire danger levels rise in Greenville and surrounding areas, NWS warns

The National Weather Service in Jackson has issued a Level 3 fire danger alert for parts of Mississippi, including Greenville. Much of the state is under a Level 2 elevated risk, according to the agency.

Conditions are expected to remain dry and windy from late morning through the afternoon, increasing the risk of wildfires. The NWS warns that even small sparks can quickly ignite dangerous fires under these conditions.

In Level 3 areas, wildfires could spread rapidly, and fires are more likely to escape control in Level 2 zones. Residents are advised not to attempt open burning and to heed local burn bans. Proper disposal of cigarettes, securing tow chains, and avoiding parking on dry grass are recommended safety measures, according to the NWS.

Mayor Errick D. Simmons emphasized the importance of shared responsibility in fire prevention. “Public safety is a shared responsibility. A single spark can endanger homes, families, and first responders. Let’s work together to protect Greenville and the Mississippi Delta,” he said.

Residents are urged to stay alert, prepared, and safe during the heightened fire risk period.
