Dog fighting bust in Sardis leads to multiple arrests and rescues

Authorities responded to a property on Rock Hill Road west of Sardis, Mississippi, on Sunday, Jan. 18, 2026, where they encountered a dog fighting operation in the planning stages, according to the Panola County Sheriff’s Office.

Four people were arrested at the scene. Portia Henderson, 35, of Batesville, faces charges including dog fighting, conspiracy, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Derrick Fondren, 32, of Sardis, was charged with dog fighting, conspiracy, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Marlo Cox, 30, of Batesville, was charged with conspiracy. Andrew Franklin, 31, of Horn Lake, faces conspiracy charges, authorities said.

Officials rescued 23 dogs from the scene, which are now being treated at various locations in the area. Several vehicles were towed and impounded. The Panola County Sheriff’s Office said additional arrests are anticipated as the investigation continues.
